Jean Charley-Call Nursing Scholarship

The HEEF is pleased to announce the Jean Charley-Call Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship was established by her family to honor Mrs. Jean Charley-Call. Charley-Call is a Hopi mother, grandmother, volunteer and former nurse from the Village of Upper Moenkopi.

Jean Charley-Call of the Maasaw Clan is the daughter of the late Irving Charley and Phyllis Numkena-Charley. She was born and raised in the village of Moenkopi where she attended day school. After attending high school at the Santa Fe Indian School and the Haskell Institute, Charley-Call completed nursing school in Albuquerque. After completing her education, Charley-Call returned to Hopi and worked as a surgical nurse at the Tuba City hospital where she met her husband, Dr. Marvin Call.

Dr. Call and his children chose to honor Mrs. Jean Charley-Call with the scholarship as both a birthday and Mother’s Day gift. Mrs. Charley-Call has worked tirelessly to provide opportunities to Hopi youth through volunteerism as a former board member for Futures for Children and through her generous support of the HEEF. She said because the field of medicine
has played such a prominent role in her life, she would like to encourage young Hopi people to pursue a nursing career and hopefully return to work with their people on the reservation.

The Call’s reside in Albuquerque and enjoy spending their time at their “retirement” home in Moenkopi as often as possible. They have three daughters and eight grandchildren.

The Jean Charley-Call Nursing Scholarship is available to full-time Hopi students who are pursuing a degree in the nursing field. There are two $1,000.00 scholarships available for the 2011 – 2012 Academic Year and two additional scholarships available for the 2012 – 2013 Academic Year. The deadline date to apply for the 2011 – 2012 AY is July 15, 2011; please contact the HTGSP for more information at (800) 762-9630 or (928) 734-3542.
