Fall is Alumni Challenge season for the Hopi Education Endowment Fund. Every year since 2004, the HEEF has held a friendly competition among four alumni groups - the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the Arizona Crushers (a collective of all other schools). The group that raises the most funds is declared the winner at the end of the competition.
The Alumni Challenge is a unique opportunity for those who have had the gift of a post-secondary education to give back and allow a Hopi student the chance to make his or her educational dreams a reality. This competition also gets HEEF staff and board members involved and battling among each other to show pride for their alma mater. Parents are also encouraged to give on behalf of their child's college or university.
The HEEF Alumni Challenge began in 2004 and has raised over $44,000 in its past 12 iterations. In 2015, the challenge had its best year, raising over $9,500. Last year's success raised the bar and now we have our sights set high. The goal for the 13th annual Alumni Challenge is to raise $10,000 - enough to fund five students for a semester!
Out of the past 12 competitions, the NAU alumni group has won nine times, including last year's challenge. They are always the group to beat. The AZ Crushers are the only group besides NAU to win the Alumni Challenge more than once. ASU made a last-minute surge at our fall gala last year, which was held on their turf in Tempe. This year, our student & donor recognition event Creating Pathways... is going to be held in Tucson at the U of A Student Union Memorial Center. We will be accepting donations at this event and you can be sure there will be a late influx of U of A pledges there.
