Our Students: Michael Adams

It's been 4 years since Mike Adams was on his way to Southern California to pursue his degree in Kinesiology at Occidental College. Since then his plans have slightly changed, and we are happy to share that Mike will be receiving his Bachelors in Psychology in May 2008, along with an induction into the Psi Chi Honor Society in Psychology.

Mike's original plans were to study Kinseology and while taking a pre-requisite class, Introduction to Psychology, "Was fascinated with the material being taught, so I further explored the area of Psychology and found a new academic interest." He added that, "I still have a high interest in science, therefore my plans are to combine my interest in psychology and take pre-medicine courses in a post-bachelorette program. I enjoy learning new information and want to continue my education while I still have this fascination."

The invaluable experience of attending a Private Liberal Arts College in urban Los Angeles, allowed Mike to view himself in a very different context and appreciate the saying "Come back and help your people." He stated, "I am still searching for ways that I can give back to my community and achieve all that I want to."

Mike also appreciated the financial support he received from the HTGSP. "I am truly grateful for the support the funds provided. The funding from HTGSP gave me the ability of not having to take out a loan, and also helps ease the transition into college for families working to support a students education. I would have never attended Occidental College without financial support." He also shared his thanks to HEEF donors saying, "Their support has the power to impact a person's life and bring positive change for the student and their family. Just a little goes a long way in supporting a person to accomplish their goals."

As a first generation college graduates Mike reflects on his path and shared, "I never thought about the significance or importance of this accomplishment until I was a college senior. I hope my accomplishment will open doors and instill motivation in my family and other Hopi people that it is possible. I know my parents, Vernida Polacca and Edward Adams are extremely proud of me and that look on their faces when I make them proud is something that motivates me and keeps me wanting to accomplish more."
